When I was a kid my mom would make cinnamon baked apples all the time and they were always one of my favorite desserts.

In fact I think my love of apple desserts, like apple crostata and apple pie stems from these baked apples.

Now that I have a family of my own I continue the tradition and make them often, sometimes topped with vanilla ice cream, or with evaporated milk as my mom would do.

Recipe Ingredients

All ingredients for this recipe are shown in the pic below and special notes are made in this bulleted list to assist you.

Ingredients shown: raisins, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 4 apples.
  • Apples. My mom always used Rome apples for her baked apples and that’s usually what I use, but baking apples like Braeburn and Granny Smith are also good. That being said, you really can use any apple and have great results.
  • Sugar and spice. I’m using a combination of brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Feel free to add other spices, such as pumpkin pie spice or allspice. You can also add oats and/or chopped nuts to the mixture, if desired.
  • Raisins. I love adding raisins to baked apples (and other desserts like rice pudding and oatmeal raisin pecan cookies) but I’m aware that some people aren’t fans. The raisins can be omitted if you don’t like them, or you can try other dried fruit like dried cherries or berries.
  • Butter. Unsalted butter is best for these old-fashioned baked apples.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Hi James and Tara,
This brings back childhood memories for me…. Bakes apples are a popular thing in the province of Quebec. My grandmother made them often as apples were readily available and inexpensive. I made them for my children also. Thank you for the reminder as it has been dark side of the moon cold here recently.

  7. Debbie Lynch says:

It tastes so much better when you squeeze lemon over the apples and into the sauce or water. My grandma’s recipe from way why back. Can’t have them without the lemon.
    Give it a try
